I know how it feels to abandon yourself. I have been there, and I know there is a way through it with grace and purpose

My Path Home

and My Bridge Back to Self

I was born in Bogotá, Colombia and came to New York at seven. I lost my mother at fourteen and my father at eighteen.

What I learned early is that survival meant staying useful. Staying focused on everyone else. Because looking inward felt too dangerous and unsafe.

I lived that pattern for years. Through addiction, anxiety and depression, through the complicated relationship with my own body that so many of us know intimately, through the slow erosion of self that happens when you give everything to everyone and call it love.

It wasn't that I didn't want to live. I just didn't know how.

And then something cracked open.

There came a moment when I could no longer ignore the distance between the life I was living and the one I could feel waiting for me. A moment when my blood began to remember, and invited me to return home. To my ancestors, my heritage, and those who held the wisdom that ran through my veins.

And thus the journey home began in earnest.

What brought me back was not one thing. It was many — grief, yoga, clinical training, the ancestral wisdom of Colombia's Indigenous communities, and the gradual, honest practice of learning to find safety within me and the act of place one hand on my heart and ask what I actually needed.

The return was daily. Sometimes two steps forward and one step back. And it was completely possible.

That journey is why I do this work.

What I bring

Maria Claudia Montes MSW integrative wellness coach New York New Jersey

My training spans two worlds that rarely meet. My work draws from trauma-informed, person-centered, somatic, Gestalt, and expressive arts approaches alongside yoga therapy, life coaching, clinical hypnotherapy, and Reiki. It is a full integration of mind, body, spirit, and earth.

And there is one dimension of this work that tends to surprise people.

I also hold an Associate degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, professional Makeup Artistry training from Christine Valmay in New York, and certification as an Image Consultant from The London Image Institute in Atlanta. That second set of credentials is not separate from the first — it is the other half of the same conversation. The intersection of wellness and personal style.

Because returning to yourself eventually shows up on the outside. In how you carry yourself. In what you reach for when you open your closet in the morning, imagine finding only your best friends there, the ones who speak highly of you when you walk into a room. And, in how much space you allow yourself to take up.

Ultimately, it is self-empowerment through personal image — how you see yourself and how others see you.

Why I built Bridgepath

My interdisciplinary methodology integrates the full range of my training — creating a whole-person approach grounded in both contemporary science and ancestral wisdom. And it extends beyond the individual.

I walk alongside the Organización Wiwa Golkushe Tayrona (OWGT) as Bridgepath's supporting partner in La Ley de Origen (Shembuta) a flagship initiative led entirely by the Mamos and Sagas of the Wiwa people to document the Wiwa Law of Origin (Phase 1 is complete and self-funded. Phase 2 begins July 2026).and the Wiwa Women's Micro-Grant Program, supporting economic sovereignty for Wiwa women in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia

Over the past decade, I have led programs in coaching, wisdom circles, retreats, and culturally grounded work with Indigenous communities in Colombia. Every engagement at Bridgepath directly funds the Wiwa people's documentation of the Shembuta Ley de Origen, the Women's Art Program, educational grants, and local support for the Sagas and Mamos.

I believe that human dignity, personal well-being, cultural continuity, and ecological stewardship are inseparable and that the most powerful change happens when individuals and communities lead from their own wisdom and sovereignty.
